The Mayo Clinic Book of Home Remedies: What to Do For The Most Common Health Problems

Surprising Mayo Clinic book
I was suprised by this book because I never envisioned that I would be critical about a Mayo Clinic book. The beautiful cover, overall format, the quality of its paper as well as its graphics are outstanding. Noless impressive is the expected professional reputations of its writers. However you should never judge a bookby its cover as the saying goes and in this case all the aforementioned qualities are in play. I have tostate that I am not even an M.D. I am just a another reader in search of the Mayo Clinic wisdom. At the end, I could not find a modicum of personal satisfaction. I have not read the entire book, Thanks God. I read those chapters devoted to special topics of relevance to me. For the most part, what I read in those chapters I had already known from my medical readings through the years. I did find a few ideas and suggestions that were new to me or interesting to remember yet I would not have bought this book for this reason alone. Mine is just an opinion with very little details, I know. Keep in mind I am just a common reader, another regular patient. To conclude, this book requires more detailed descriptions, explanations, suggestions of the topics in question without becoming medical encyclopaedia or perhaps this is the reason that I don`t feel comfortable with this volume. I am hoping that it will get a much better review than mine. N.Alvarez

Very Very Basic
Very disappointed. Mayo Clinic is renowned for their cutting edge in medicine so that set up an expectation for me that this book would really have great insight to common ailments/problems. The cover shows a bowl that looks like honey, and something that looks like supplements maybe. The Title says HOME Remedies, so with this book being done by the Mayo clinic, and it shows items that you can use from your home, or supplements and the title I expected actual remedies.I will list a few of the things in the book to explain my disappointment.Sprains is listed in the book - Their advice? RICE - Rest, ice, compress, elevate I mean this is extremely basic 1st aid that I would think most would know. There was absolutely no insight into some novel way to handle such a common thing.Indigestion - Eat smaller more frequent meals, avoid triggers, maintain healthy weight, exercise, manage stress, reconsider meds, drink herbal tea with peppermint. Anyone that has been diagnosed with this, knows those VERY basic things. But I expected to see, try eating Ginger as it really helps settle the stomach. I wanted to hear about natural remedies that could be used at home to resolve this.Eczema - Identify and avoid triggers, apply anti-itch cream, avoid scratching, use mild soaps and moisturize skin, use a humidifier......Again anyone that has this diagnosis knows these very basic things. A dermatologist would clearly say to take warm, but not hot shower, and to put a cream on while your skin is still moist....There are a FEW things that do list supplements or something that you can do to help. You may see drink tea or take B vitamins or something sprinkled here and there but overall this book doesn't really offer anything unique.

I have mixed feelings about this book.
This book was verbose and sometimes not easy to get the info you hoped to find. I was hoping for a book helping you deal with ordinary things that come up in everyday living. It did some of that, but was hard to pin down the info I needed or hoped to find. I wanted clear, simple problems like how to treat a cold or how to tell the difference in just a hacking cough and something you needed quick attention by a doctor with. Maybe I was looking for something that doesn't exist - quick, easy info about ordinary health problems.

Basic first aid
Not much more. Should we lose access to the internet, this book is a fall back reference if every needed.

Grandmotherly advice
The book reminds me of remedies that you might have gotten from a grandmother. Not a problem but it would have been nice if there was a little more technical detail behind some of the explanations. Had to buy the Mayo Clinic Family Health Book to get that extra info. The book does include fixes for some of the most common problems and suggests when you need to seek medical help if certain symptoms are there.Mostly I needed to purchase since I only have internet access at work and kids usually get sick at 3:00am.

Reliable and interesting
Although this book is called "Home Remedies," you will find a lot of first aid information that is helpful and solid. For example, I twisted my ankle not too long ago and then subsequently hurt my back. I found that the advice was useful and sensible.A lot of readers may want home remedies that are not too different from folk medicine. This book is not for you. This is a very well-designed, interesting book that offers updated health-care information about health problems that can typically be treated at home.If you live in a hurricane zone as I do, I think this book would be a useful addition to one's emergency kit.

Healthy resource
This book is a great resource for solid practical advice on the treatment of many medical problems. It provides clear and sufficiently detailed information to help you identify the issue you have, how to deal with it, and when you should be seeing a professional. Friends and neighbors often offer good help for what ails you, but this book is a more secure reference. It is easy to use, and covers a very wide range if health issues.

Everyone can use this
With healthcare premiums rising steadily and many not able to afford health insurance, this book, at the very least, has the capacity to put your mind at ease orrealize that it's time to see the doc or change some daily habits.
