Painting Central Park

Revisiting one of the world's great parks through the lens of art history is an unusual and splendid idea. The book is beautifully conceived and carried out! My only wish is that Mr. Pasquier would consider undertaking a similar endeavor for other distinctive urban parks , such as Prospect Park in Brooklyn and St. James Park in London. Particularly in this day and age, there is a great need to recognize and celebrate the life-sustaining role of urban parkland as artists, both renowned and largely unknown, have celebrated it.

I had great expectations for this book. I am an avid lover and admirer of Central Park, its history and of course all depictions of its incredible and natural setting. This book claims to capture paintings that really bring you into the essence and Aura of Central Park but it falls very very short of that goal. The bottom line is that there are a handful of incredible depictions and paintings of the settings that are embodied in Central Park but the majority of the pieces are quite uninspired, mundane, and just much to ordinary. I would have liked to have seen a much more creative outlet exposed and something that is just not so boring. It is Art nonetheless that we are showcasing here. Off the top of my head I can imagine 15 or 20 other pieces I have seen over the years both amateur and professional that clearly outdoes anything this book can show. This compliation is a complete failure in my opinion both as a good read to just skim through and even as a coffee table book that you would want to leave out for people to peruse. Put this one on the back shelf. It is a complete waste of time and money.
