Q: I've heard applying a wood stain directly to birch-ply ends up with a blotchy finish. So a wood pre-stain is required. Would this do the job?

I haven't tried this on birch but all blotch prone woods do require a sanding sealer. This has worked fine for me on pine and oak. You should apply a thin base coat. I don't think you should then have any problems. Good luck.

Hi. I used this product as a sealer on sanded timber and it dries to a slightly darker finish. I used Danish oil afterwards to obtain a golden oak finish. The instructions on the tin are excellent and I followed them with a resulting superb finish. The instructions also give advice on staining

It would be wise to allow it to dry before applying chalk paint, although it dries so quickly it would be difficult to do otherwise. The purpose of this product is to enable the surface to be sanded to a fine finish, particularly end grain. It needs to dry before being sanded. It can also be used to stop stains going darker on end grain.

Q: Can this be applied on wood that has already been waxed, although much more wax is required to get a good finish?

Yes - start by lightly sanding and removing any dust from piece of wood being renovated. Then apply first thin layer of polish in full flurishing movements. Very light sanding and wiping away of dust from first layer. Then do as many layers as you require. Letting each application dry between layers. Then buff the last layer . Hopefully you will achieve the finish you require.
